What is the GBS test?

GBS, or Group B Streptococcus, is a bacterium found in some pregnant women. This bacterium can potentially lead to the infection of the fetus during childbirth, which in a small percentage of cases may result in a severe illness in the newborn.

How is the test conducted?

It is advisable to consult with your obstetrician about the option of having a swab test. The swab is taken from the rectum and the vaginal area during weeks 35-37 of pregnancy. If the result is positive and you are a carrier of the bacterium, it is important to inform the labor and delivery room upon your arrival so that you can receive prophylactic antibiotics during labor to minimize the risk of fetal infection.
