Rights of Organ Donors

Organ donation gives another person a second chance at a better quality of life.

Under the Organ Transplantation Law of 2008, specific procedures were established to safeguard the medical, health, and economic well-being of organ donors, ensuring their mental and physical health in the future.
For Leumit Insurance Institute members who donate organs for transplantation in Israel (such as kidneys, liver lobes, or lung lobes), rights are granted for various medical services, both within the framework of the Leumit Health Basket (Sal HaBri'ut) and as Leumit Insurance beneficiaries. These entitlements apply in all cases of organ donation, whether to a family member or another individual.

Exemption from Medical Services and Tests in the Health Basket Related to Organ Donation

Organ donors for transplantation are exempt from paying for medical services and tests within the Health Basket that are associated with the organ donation process. This exemption covers preliminary examinations required for the donation, the expenses related to the organ retrieval surgery, follow-up tests, routine tests for the kidney donor, medications, and more. The exemption is effective from the day the organ is retrieved and includes the preliminary tests conducted before the transplantation.

Purchase of Medications

Organ donors are entitled to pay for their participation in medications and consumables following the chronic patient's defined basket, starting from the first year following the organ retrieval for donation.
Additionally, as a token of appreciation to the donors, the Leumit Insurance Institute has expanded the entitlements granted within the Health Basket, providing donors with an exemption from payment for medications and self-participation in the Health Basket services (regardless of the organ donation) for one year from the day of organ retrieval.
