The Complexities of Breast Feeding

During breastfeeding, abdominal pain and cramps may occur. These are caused by the secretion of the hormone oxytocin, which on the one hand helps create the milk, but on the other hand may cause discomfort. To relieve cramps, you can place a heating pad on your stomach or take over-the-counter medications (only with the approval of the attending physician)

Until you and baby get used to breastfeeding, you may suffer from cracked, painful and even bleeding nipples. There are ointments that relieve nipple pain. Some can be left on while breastfeeding, while others must be cleaned off, so read the instructions carefully.

We recommend using breathable cotton nursing pads, and changing them often. Make sure you hold the baby in a position that is comfortable for both of you, with your nipple resting on the back of the baby's palate. Disconnect the vacuum created by your baby's mouth, before you disconnect them from the breast. If the problem continues, it is recommended to contact a lactation consultant for advice and help.

When your breasts are full, they may feel heavy, hard and painful. Breastfeeding relieves the congestion and eases the pain. If you can't breastfeed, you should go to the bathroom to relieve some of the pressure manually or with a breast pump.

Sometimes a blockage will occur in one of the milk ducts leading the milk to the nipple. When the blockage is not released (by frequent feedings, placing a warm towel for relief and gentle massage), there is a chance of infection and the development of mastitis.

The symptoms of mastitis include:

  • The breast is warm to the touch, sensitive and painful
  • Redness
  • Body pain, similar to the flu
  • Heat

In this case, seek professional advice as soon as possible.
